It's hardly an easy time to come into Electronic Arts, admits Van Caneghem, but he tells Gamasutra he's excited to bring a franchise he's long loved into the online space.
"Direct-to-consumer is where I think most games are going, and I've always been a fan of the series," he says. And despite highly-visible challenges for EA in recent months, Van Caneghem says he believes in the company's goals for online migration. "It's challenging, but I think it's a great time," he says of the timing of his hire. "The company has the same vision I do on the future of games and the future of this franchise, so I think it's going be great." Following record entries for IGF's Main and Student competition, IGF Mobile organizers are reminding of a December 1st deadline for the third annual festival honoring handheld indie games.
This year's competition -- the sister event to the main Independent Games Festival -- will again feature independently-developed handheld games for all mobile devices including Apple's iPhone, other cellphone and smartphone OSes, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, and other handheld devices.
Now in its third year, IGF Mobile (part of Think Services, as is this website) has blossomed into a major showcase of the handheld form. Apple's App Store created a special Store section just to highlight the IGF-nominated iPhone games from 2009's IGF Mobile competition, which included acclaimed titles such as Fieldrunners, Real Racing, Zen Bound and Galcon.
In addition, last year's IGF Mobile 'Next Great Mobile Game' winner Reflection has been signed by Konami for Nintendo DSi.
The overall IGF Mobile winner will be revealed at the IGF Awards Ceremony, which precedes the Game Developers Choice Awards on March 11th, 2010. (Both the IGF Awards Ceremony and the Game Developers Choice Awards are part of the 2010 Game Developers Conference, which takes place in San Francisco's Moscone Center in March.) IGF Mobile submissions are still being accepted at the competition's official website through December 1, 2009; finalists will be announced in January 2010, and will each receive one pass to attend the 2010 Game Developers Conference. Finalists will compete for $5,000 in prizes, including notable awards for design, art, and technology innovation in mobile game development. This year, winners in each category (with the exception of 'Best Game') will be announced before the show, on February 8th, 2010. Each category winner will receive $500 in spending money to come to the 2010 Game Developers Conference in March 2010 and showcase their mobile game, alongside their GDC pass. The new larger-screened Nintendo DSi LL outsold all other hardware in Japan during the week ended November 22, selling 100,553 units in two days, and toppling the week's sales for PlayStation hardware that ruled a week prior.
Weekly figures from tracking firm Media Create now show three different versions of Nintendo's popular DS handheld: DSi LL, DSi, and the DS Lite. Total sales for the DS line during the week were 137,674 units. The DSi LL figures align closely with numbers recently released by research firm Enterbrain.
The DSi LL's sales from November 21st to 22nd handily topped the week's sales of PlayStation 3, which have been solid since the console's price reduction and hardware form factor revamp. PS3 led hardware charts in the two week prior to this week. Last week, PS3 and its handheld counterpart PSP together led the hardware charts. There is a villainous mastermind behind all of the events one sees, but it is never quite clear why he does all of the different things he does: surely some of the feints and counterfeints of his deception are completely unnecessary. At the end, when the player has clicked through and viewed all of the evidence, he's invited to see a connect-the-dots playing that puts elements in their chronological order. That's a bit helpful, but it doesn't resolve the fact that this is a bizarre and basically nonsensical plot with no particular theme other than, perhaps, that nothing is what it seems.
The interaction exacerbates the problems, however. If the whole point of the experience is that we understand more when we know more, the failure of the whole project to come together into a sharp, coherent story is a very serious flaw. A good gotcha twist at the end of a movie -- The Usual Suspects, say, or Sixth Sense -- is that it makes an instant sense of everything confusing that came before. With HBO Imagine, the site and its interaction sells itself as being about discovery, about movement towards understanding. To the extent that there's a purpose in making this an interactive rather than a traditional-format movie, it is because the act of exploration engages the player more fully, invites him to make and test hypotheses about what is going on. To go to that effort and still not to understand is vexing. And it is effort: it's interesting playing with the cubical films, turning them this way and that to see the action from all angles, but it's a lot more effort than watching a conventional movie. It's easy to imagine the same information presented on a four-way split screen, and the result would have been a lot easier to process.
The only point of presenting the films this way is to force the player/viewer to take action in order to uncover what is initially hidden. The interactivity forces engagement with the content, but the player has only limited control over how much he discovers, and even diligent pursuit of the truth is incompletely rewarded with understanding. One strength of the design is the "Chart Your Progress" page, which gives the reader/player a map of the interaction and labels each short film or piece of evidence. That provides a little sense of agency, in that it's possible to decide to explore one subplot before another, or attempt to skip down to the end of a subplot in order to understand what everything builds to.
But notice I say "attempt": the labels are often not very revealing of what the contents are really about, and that means that the player's one possible form of agency, choosing a route through the story, is rendered meaningless most of the time. Moreover, the sense of involvement and agency slackens even more at the end: all the player can do is click through the last several elements.
With all that, I'm not saying this project is a failure. It is full of funny moments, and it's certainly gotten more attention than most bits of advertising fluff I've come across. I was engaged enough to play with it through to the end. And the cube-facing films really are ingeniously made, with the body language of actors suggesting different things from different perspectives.
No, my real point is this: interactive storytelling -- even when it's not meant to be a game -- still needs a game designer. It needs someone who will think about what the reader/player is supposed to do, and what that action means, and how it contributes to the story being told.

By aligning itself with the Shanghai World Expo, DreamHack and the CPL put esports among the Expo's 70 million expected visitors. "Digital-sports and gaming has started, in a very profound way, to change the views of governments and society in general," Valencia said. "This project has the official governmental support of Sweden and China. We are already in talks with other goverments and associations around the world. This project has taken us to all corners of the globe and it's growing on a daily basis." "The essence of the Digital Youth Award program promotes the values of creativity, culture, friendship, education, and unity."

This week on 'Best Of Indie Games', we take a look at some of the top independent PC Flash/downloadable titles released over this last week. The goodies in this edition include a Japanese mech combat game for both Windows and Xbox 360, a mysterious platform game with a spooky atmosphere, a freeware horror adventure game full of suspense, an action puzzle game with a nifty gimmick, and an exploration platformer rendered in shades of black and white. Game Pick: 'Fetus' (Ted Lauterbach, freeware) "A puzzle platformer in which you play as a blue character lost in a strange world, seeking to exact revenge on the party responsible for trapping him there in the first place. There is no screen scrolling and your character cannot jump, but Ted still manages to construct one or two surprises to catch the player off-guard. Made for GameJolt's Minimal Competition."
Game Pick: '20 Heroes' (H. Inada, browser) "20 Heroes is a puzzle platformer with a unique twist, where players are assigned twenty characters to control separately, in a group, or all at the same time. Puzzles in every area are designed around this theme, and the creativity of the designer really shows after the fifth stage or so."
Game Pick: 'The Marionette' (Team Effigy, freeware) "A full-length 2D adventure game viewed from a first-person perspective, where you play as a sculptor named Martin who is in the middle of completing his latest work when a mysterious package arrives in his mailbox. He loses consciousness just moments after opening the plain-looking envelope, and wakes up much later only to find himself standing outside an unfamiliar house. Unperturbed by the strange turn of events, our confused protagonist heads into the house to seek for answers that will explain how and why he was brought to the spooky estate in the first place."
Game Pick: 'Umbrella Adventure - The Castle of Cake' (HiVE, freeware) "A monotone-coloured platformer created by the developer of the popular Game Maker RPG, Ark 22. The story is about a gopher who was rudely awakened by the smell of sulphur to find his stash of more than a hundred cakes stolen in the middle of a rainy night. Curious about the disappearance, he sets out on a quest to find his delicacies, even if it means travelling all over the land to retrieve every single one of them."

We've known that an expansion for World of Warcraft has been underway at Blizzard for some time, several adventurous gamers even managing to catch a few snapshots of the new content through the existing title. We now know that the forthcoming add-on will be titled The Burning Crusade, and will apparently be set in the realm of Outland, where bad things happen. The land is ruled by the tyrannical Illidan, and you - of course - are tasked with the destruction of this nefarious git. With the new expansion the top level will hit 70, a necessary milestone for those hoping to succeed, and players soaring to these dizzy heights will literally be able to do just that. Fly. On a creature, of course.
Eight new dungeons will also be opened to the player, whilst access to Outland can only be made through the treacherous 'Dark Portal', thanks to Illidan's decision to close off all other portals. The swine. As well as the new dungeons, which culminate with the final battle at the Black Temple, there's the Caverns of Time. These dungeons allow you to journey through classic moments in the Warcraft timeline, and can be accessed by players of lowly rankings - despite the upward curve of the pack generally.
The Burning Crusade will include a new race called the Blood Elves, who fight for the Horde, and another for the Alliance, which remains a mystery at this point. Jewel crafting is the new skills enabled through the pack, and this ability will allow you to create all manner of pretties. More on this expansion as we get it.

After months of speculation and glossy-eyed dreaming by fans of the game, Blizzard have finally made official their plans for WoW's first full-on expansion. The Burning Crusade will pack new races, lands and dungeons into a single package that will take the developing story of Warcraft to the next level.
Centred around the action of the Burning Legion and their attempts to control the world of Azeroth, the Burning Crusade will open up a host of new zones for players to adventure in. The Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands will finally open up to reveal the path to the Outland, an entirely new land where the imaginations of the WoW development team have been allowed to run amok. Here in the Outlands there will be all manner of new zones and dungeons to test your mettle against as well as flying mounts, available only to those who crawl their way up to the newly increased level cap of 70.

To accommodate the higher levels there will be plenty of new dungeons to explore and conquer. A total of eight new high-level instances are planned, from Hellfire Citadel to the Kharazan Tower, Tempest Keep and Auchindoun all the way up to The Black Temple, home of ultimate badguy Illidan and by far the hardest raid dungeon yet created. The Caverns of Time in Tanaris can also now be explored. This most intriguing sounding of areas will allow player to witness and become involved in many of the most famous events in the Warcraft lore as players are transported to existing zones as they appeared in the distant past. New dungeons will appear in both the Outland and the current zones in an attempt to prevent a mass exodus through the Dark Portal.
Two new races will appear in Azenroth. The Horde will be joined by the Blood Elves, an outcast race with an ancestral connection to magic. The Alliance will also swell with the inclusion of a new, as yet-unnamed race, although there are plenty of rumours they will be the Panderans, a sickeningly cute race which if true, would be yet another reason why no one in their right mind would want to play as the Alliance. Accordingly there will be new starting zones opening up, with Blood Elves residing to the north of the Eastern Plaguelands in a zone currently blocked off by a landslide.
The new profession of jewel-crafting will allow players to fashion all kinds of powerful enhancements for their equipment as WoW is following Diablo 2's steps and introducing socketed items. Slotting gems and jewels into these sockets in the right combinations will greatly add to the power and abilities of items. Existing professions will also be expanded to take advantage of the increased level limit, so hopefully Master Swordsmiths may finally find they have a reason for existing. Naturally there will be hundreds of new items to acquire throughout the expanded world along with hundreds of new quests for adventurers of every level and more new monsters then you can shake a bestiary at.
While no release date has yet been set millions of World of Warcraft fans around the globe will already be staring off into space imagining the new heights of power and infamy that they will soon be able to pursue. Expect a more in depth-preview once more rumours solidify into fact. Currently there are some intriguing and believable ones suggesting that the expansion will be out this December. Of course, the location and timing points to The Burning Crusade but it seems highly unlikely Blizzard would risk the community's displeasure by offering beta sign-up opportunities when no beta was guaranteed. Indeed, some of the more outlandish reports now point to a new MMO-styled Diablo game, perpetuating further excitement from Blizzard's legions of fans.
